One of the things I enjoy is going to nearby creeks and picking pieces of interesting driftwood with my wife. We have a great time in nature and find some cool natural art to bring back home. Our porch is filled with random wood pieces, many of which appear to have been debarked by beavers or some type of critter. Others are sun-bleached and worn from tumbling over the bazillions of rocks along the streams.
I found a small stick that was pretty gnarly and brought it back to my workshop. Later, I sliced it into about half inch pieces and arranged them in multiple ways until I found a layout that was appealing. The result was pretty neat; I tried to create a mirror image effect by flipping similar pieces and a affixing them opposite each other. The gnarly wood slices made some almost ink-blot shapes.
Then they were glued to a small board that I prepared for a backing. The glue used was an exterior waterproof wood glue found in big box hardware stores. After it dried for a day or two, I carefully painted in between with black acrylic paint and sanded the surface with a belt sander. I rubbed a light coat of some kind of wood stain on the front; attached a hanger on the back and boom…. Wood art.
Dimensions are approx. 7.5” wide x 12” tall x 1.25” depth
Materials: Wood board, driftwood piece, wood glue, wood stain, acrylic paint, hanger hardware
The time is took is a little tough to figure up since there was lots of daydreaming and looking for things during the process. I’m very unorganized. 🙂
Overall I’m pleased with the results and I’m brainstorming future wood art ideas to build. It was relatively easy and a lot of fun. Arranging the pieces felt therapeutic for me in a way, and seems that it would be a great way to meditate and relax. Looking forward to doing another one; hey, I think I’m going to head out to the porch to find another idea.
