Woodburning a Black Bear – Adventures in pyrography.
Lately, I’ve gotten more interested in pyrography or woodburning. My wife bought me a better woodburning pen; actually it’s a table top style with two pens plugged into it. There’s a temperature control with digital display, and it has a switch to flip between the two pens. This saves time since I won’t have to change out the tips during the session. Or I can use one pen until it wears out and use the other one as a backup.
I decided to burn a scene with a black bear and some trees; it’s similar to an acrylic painting that I painted since I used the same pose in this new woodburned one. It looks pretty nice on the Basswood plank that it’s burned into.
This piece is a “practical” artwork in that I put a small ledge shelf underneath the black bear burning; it’s art with a bit of functionality. Makes a great little spot for small items for display or something like a pair of sunglasses.
Also, the basswood plank has a live edge on two sides with bark and remnants of moss; the little shelf has a live edge along the front too; a simple clean and natural look.
There’s so many uses for a pyrography pen in the types of artwork that I create. I’m working on some power-carvings also, and I’m gonna mix it up with woodburning for the shading and whatnot. Yeah, it’s gettin’ crazy up in here.
I’ve been artin’ full time for ten years now; I started with acrylic painting and have been venturing out into other wood crafting lately like carving, other wood art, and pyrography. Hope you will have a look at some of my other art on my site. If nothing else you can laugh at me. LOL.
I watch an artist name Scott O’Conner on youtube and he creates some really cool wood art with scrap wood and driftwood. I was inspired to try his style of wood art… Click here if you want to look at how it turned out.
